A Striking Resemblance

Quilt Surface Design Symposium • Columbus College of Art & Design

In this 2-day workshop, you will learn how to imitate turquoise, ivory and jade out of polymer clay. Study, observe samples and images of these authentic objects. Explore their colors, textures, translucency and surfaces as you participate in this enjoyable class. Learn to re-create turquoise by making beautifully-colored nuggets and consolidating them to form tiles and beads. You'll discover how the matrix (dark lines) is revealed and be fascinated after developing the true likeness of turquoise! Imitate ivory by layering clays to re-create the 3-d graining and translucency of the elephant's tusk. Carve, slash and antique your pieces to make them look ancient. Simulate jade with a translucent-based clay body tinted with an array of mottled uneven shades of green and other colors. You may even choose to add random markings of impurities that represent the minerals in the body of this elegant stone. Your impressive collection of beads and components will certainly fool the eye! Session IV, Class #26.
